The Aviation High English program is designed to develop students' skills in language use. Students achieve this through exposure to a wide range of literature and everyday texts.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH
This program encompasses the Essential Learnings mandated by the Queensland Studies Authority. Each unit integrates the development of specific language skills:
All students are encouraged to read widely. This is enhanced by their participation in Accelerated Reader, a computer based program which tracks students' reading and comprehension.
The students' passion for aviation is celebrated when possible, in text and context choice.
Technology is deeply embedded in Middle School English, for example,Wingspan Radio, the radio facility of Aviation High, is used across all year levels to equip students with specific speaking skills, especially in microphone use and broadcasting, skills which are highly valued across the aviation industries.
English, the Authority subject, which can lead to an Overall Position (OP), is studied by the majority of students in Years 11 and 12 at Aviation High. English celebrates the variety of texts types and literature, primarily from within our culture, but also exposes students to literature from other cultures.
English Communication, an Authority Registered subject, is offered at Aviation High. This subject is perhaps best chosen by students who do not intend to engage in tertiary study and who will develop their understandings of the language for work, community and leisure. Students of this subject will undertake many of their activities based on Wingspan Radio, Aviation High's radio facility, to develop their oral language skills.
