Data
While data comes in many forms, all industries are now collecting enormous amounts of numerical data (numbers) due to rapid growth in the number of digital devices available. But just because you have the data, it doesn't mean you know what it all means or how it could be helpful. Employers want people who can use data effectively to help improve how things are done.
At Aviation High School, we have developed:
- a curriculum to support the teaching and learning of "data";
- industry links to develop pathways to real careers in "data".
Curriculum at Aviation High School
At Aviation High School, we cater for the increasing global demand for a data literate workforce by offering:
- DAX092A - a Yr 9 data-based subject (Semester 1);
- DAX101A - a Yr 10 data-based subject (Semester 2);
- Digital Solutions – a QCAA general subject worth 4 QCE and contribution to an ATAR score.
All subjects provide technical skills such as the collection, processing and interpretation of data. To do so, students will develop fluency in Microsoft Excel and Power BI, Python and SQL programming languages over the years of study. By the end of Yr 12, students will have built their own website that can automatically collect and transform data from one or more websites according to a user's particular needs.
As well as technical skills, students will also develop soft skills including collaboration and presentation of recommendations that resonate with a variety of audiences. Developing a combination of technical and soft skills provides an opportunity for students to become high-demand employees across all industries - globally.
Pathways for Aviation High School students
Our data students are part of the P-TECH initiative, an innovative model of education-industry collaboration that provides students with an industry supported pathway to a diploma or degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). P-Tech schools build relationships with their industry partners through site visits and industry mentorships.
Aviation High School's industry partners are Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), Airbus and Qld Fire and Emergency Service (QFES).
