Thinking in the Classroom

Since 2020, Aviation High School has maintained a strong school priority focused on Thinking in the Classroom. This priority reflects our commitment to developing students who are curious, reflective, and capable of applying their learning in meaningful ways.

Our approach is informed by Project Zero, a research initiative from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Project Zero promotes visible thinking, deep understanding, and classroom cultures where students are encouraged to question, reason, explain, and connect ideas.

At Aviation High School, teachers use a range of thinking routines to make student thinking visible. These routines help students slow down, organise their ideas, justify their responses, and build deeper understanding across subject areas. By regularly using these strategies, students become more confident learners who can think critically and communicate their ideas clearly.

This whole-school focus supports improved student achievement, particularly by helping students move into the upper two achievement bands. By strengthening thinking skills, students are better prepared to analyse complex tasks, respond with greater depth, and demonstrate higher levels of understanding.

Through Thinking in the Classroom, Aviation High School continues to build a culture of learning where students are challenged, supported, and encouraged to achieve their best.
