English is a dynamic learning area that develops students’ skills in understanding, creating and responding to a wide range of texts. Through the Australian Curriculum’s strands of Language, Literature and Literacy, students explore Australian stories, contemporary issues and diverse cultural perspectives.
Across Years 7–9, students build strong foundations in analysis, communication and creative expression. They study novels, films, poetry, drama and media texts, learning how authors shape meaning and how language influences audiences. Texts may include Australian young adult fiction, First Nations narratives, Shakespeare, and modern media.
These years focus on growing confidence in analytical writing, close reading, persuasive communication and imaginative composition. Students learn to craft thoughtful responses and develop their own voice as writers and speakers.
The skills gained in the junior years prepare students for senior pathways in General English, Literature, and Essential English. Whether they pursue practical communication skills, deeper literary study or analytical interpretation, students will find engaging texts and meaningful opportunities to extend their abilities and prepare for future study, work and life.
